Acupuncture and ICSI

What is ICSI?

Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) involves injecting a single sperm into the cytoplasm or centre of an egg. It was introduced in 1992 and is a treatment option for male infertility.

Acupuncture and ICSI

In a randomised, prospective, controlled clinical study of two hundred twenty-five infertile patients undergoing IVF/ICSI, 116 patients in group I received luteal-phase acupuncture according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. In group II, 109 patients received placebo acupuncture. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of luteal-phase acupuncture on the outcome of IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Luteal-phase acupuncture has a positive effect on the outcome of IVF/ICSI. The results of this study showed that in group I, the clinical pregnancy rate and ongoing pregnancy rate (33.6% and 28.4%, respectively) were significantly higher than in group II (15.6% and 13.8%).
